Direct to Mobile: D2M Technology
Up until now, we’ve needed the internet to watch live TV and shows on streaming apps on our phones. But in the future, you might not need the internet for this. The Indian Government is planning to launch something called “Direct to Mobile Technology” or D2M.
With D2M, you’ll be able to access these apps and content directly on your phone without needing an internet connection. It’s like having your favorite shows and movies on your phone all the time, even when you’re not connected to the internet. This could be really convenient for people who don’t always have a reliable internet connection.
The Department of Telecommunications, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, along with IIT Kanpur and Prasar Bharati, are teaming up to make something special happen. They are working on a technology called “D2M,” which stands for “Direct to Mobile.” It means you can watch things on your phone without needing the internet. Imagine having your favorite shows and news right there on your phone, even if you’re in a place with no internet. One really important use of D2M is for emergency warnings. Imagine if there’s a big storm or some other danger. With D2M, you can get those important alerts directly on your phone, even if the internet is not working. It’s a smart and helpful technology that can keep you informed and safe.
What is D2M technology?
D2M is like a special way of sending videos and stuff to your phone, even if you’re not connected to the internet. It’s like getting important news or emergency alerts directly on your phone without needing the internet.
This is really useful when there’s an emergency or something bad happening, like a big storm. With D2M, your phone can still get these important messages, and it won’t slow down the internet for other people. So, you won’t have to worry about using up your internet data or waiting for things to load. D2M makes sure you stay informed, especially during tough times.
How does D2M technology work?
Just like your phone can tune into a radio station to listen to music, D2M lets your phone catch special signals. Imagine you have a satellite dish at home for watching TV. That dish grabs TV signals from space and sends them to your TV box. Well, D2M is a bit like that, but for your smartphone. It catches signals without using the internet and sends them to your phone.
So, it’s like having a radio in your phone that can tune in to these special signals, just like your TV tunes using direct-to-home (DTH) broadcasting in to satellite signals. It’s a clever way to get information and entertainment without using up your internet.
Why isn’t it ready for rollout?
According to a paper published by IIT Kanpur in 2022, they talked about something called “D2M Broadcast 5G Broadband Convergence Roadmap for India.” This is all about how we can use D2M technology in India.
Right now, the phones we have don’t work with this technology. So, to get it going, We’ll need better smartphones, special tools like low noise amplifiers, baseband filters, and a receiver. These are like the special equipment that will make D2M work. People are already working on creating these things, so in the future, we might have phones that can use D2M technology to get cool stuff on our phones without the internet. It’s all about making things better and more convenient for everyone.
